What is Insomnia?
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that causes problems falling asleep. It can also include a number of symptoms that prevent you getting to sleep even though you may be tired. Insomnia can cause many more problems than just problems falling asleep. This disorder can cause you problems during the day and can cause you to lose concentration and make you drowsy during the day causing you to be much less productive during the day.
What does Insomnia do to You?
You may be concerned about what insomnia can do to you. Insomnia has a number of symptoms that can affect you which include:
- Unrestful Sleep
- Drowsiness during the day
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Difficulty falling asleep after being awoken
- Lack of concentration
Many of these symptoms go hand-in-hand with each other such as unrestful sleep and drowsiness during the day. This can be a problem because some of the symptoms can cause other symptoms which can end up snowballing to some extent.
Common Causes of Insomnia
Insomnia can be caused by a number of things. It can also be chronic or acute, meaning that it can last a long time or it can just affect you for a short period. Insomnia can be caused by things such as:
- Other Sleep Disorders
- Medical Conditions
Insomnia may actually be a symptom of other sleep disorders. Other sleep disorders that can cause insomnia are restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea. These disorders can cause you to have trouble falling asleep since they affect your sleep cycle in other ways or can cause you to have trouble staying asleep.
Many medical conditions can cause insomnia. These medical conditions can either cause discomfort by symptoms or they can just cause you to have trouble falling asleep. Medical conditions that can cause insomnia can be GERD, Arthritis, Chronic Pain, and various Neurological conditions.
Stress, Anxiety, and Depression
Stress, anxiety, and depression can cause insomnia as well. These disorders may also be amplified by the lack of sleep you get from insomnia too. Anxiety can cause insomnia by making you nervous and keeping you awake. Stress can cause short-term insomnia unless you have chronic stress. It can cause insomnia in a similar way to anxiety by causing worrying thoughts and preventing you from sleeping. Depression affects your sleep in a little different way. Depression can cause your hormones to change which can cause a shift in your sleep cycle. This affects your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep.
There are certain medications that can cause difficulty sleeping. Most of these include any stimulants and antidepressants. Insomnia can also be caused by different drinks which have chemicals such as caffeine and alcohol. Caffeine acts as a stimulant and can keep you up whereas alcohol can disrupt sleep.
